Short Shameful Confession

I've always had trouble seeing Steely Dan's music as anything other than the epitome of slick smug empty knowingness.

I don't believe you have any shame about that confession at all. You phoney!

ah, the dan. i consciously abhored them in the 70s even when their music sourrounded me - my 1st real love was smitten by them. and then i got a best of in the late 90s and loved every track. now i own them all. yes, they're smug but i still kinda like that about them. but, after all, it's the tunes that i hum not the attitude.

Stephen — well, at least it was a short confession :-). But it is shamefully like confessing you think that Van Morrison is just an over-hyped club act with a terribly-limited vocal range. Which is something else that's got me into trouble over the years.

Phil — yeah, there's the (undeniable) hummability, but I somehow can't dissasociate the attitude from the music. Oh well, my loss, for sure…
