Signs Of The Apocalypse

Oakland Middle Harbor

The air over the Bay's a murky reddish orange, thick with the smell of burning from Northern California's eight hundred uncontained wildfires; close to home, both Cody's and De Lauer's close permanently within a week of each other.

Tell me you're joking about Cody's and De Lauer's.

So what's going to happen to the Cody's owners? Are they just FINISHED?

I wish I were joking, but: Cody's, landmark Berkeley bookstore, closes — and as for De Lauer's: 101-year-old Oakland newsstand to close tonight.

You could see both events coming from miles away, unfortunately: the new Cody's spot on Shattuck was dingy and out-of-the-way, and I rarely saw anyone in there; and De Lauer just couldn't compete with the web (the location's steady downhill drift didn't help either — rumour has it that the place has been held up at gunpoint some ten times in the past year).
