Signs Of The Apocalypse

The air over the Bay's a murky reddish orange, thick with the smell of burning from Northern California's eight hundred uncontained wildfires; close to home, both Cody's and De Lauer's close permanently within a week of each other.

Tell me you're joking about Cody's and De Lauer's.
So what's going to happen to the Cody's owners? Are they just FINISHED?
I wish I were joking, but: Cody's, landmark Berkeley bookstore, closes and as for De Lauer's: 101-year-old Oakland newsstand to close tonight.
You could see both events coming from miles away, unfortunately: the new Cody's spot on Shattuck was dingy and out-of-the-way, and I rarely saw anyone in there; and De Lauer just couldn't compete with the web (the location's steady downhill drift didn't help either rumour has it that the place has been held up at gunpoint some ten times in the past year).
