Does It Matter?

As John Wilkins notes in an Evolving Thoughts posting:
[Australia] just appointed a woman [Julia Gillard] who was born in a foreign country, who is unmarried, and who is not religious, to be our executive. Compare and contrast with a nation of your choice…
Snarky and well-targeted, for sure. But it'd be equally snarky to point out that perhaps that sort of thing's possible in Australia because in the grand scheme of things, Australia just doesn't matter….

(And it'd be equally in the spirit of things to note — as one of John's commenters did — that really it was the ALP Right that appointed Gillard, rather than "Australia"…).
