Fail-Safe

"He can't do it." "What else can he do?"

Darker, more powerful, and much more mannered than I remembered (I saw it when I was in high school and zeroed in only on the action), a very early-60's Ivy League take on the claustrophobia of crisis. Never mind the all-white cast and the patrician accents, what's probably most striking from this day and age is how utterly reasonable most of the characters are, and that virtually no one mentions, let alone invokes or prays to, the Christian God. Can you imagine a crisis in the US nowadays without prayer breakfasts and paranoid self-righteous invocations of God's blessings as a justification for belligerent chest-beating and retribution in the name of that same god?
