Elliott Carter

Elliott Carter dies (at 103). His "Night Fantasies" (Rosen) hit me as soon as I heard it: a congenial mixture of rhythmic and micro-structural complexity, a piece that evoked the title in unforced ways, a way into more complex modernist (and post-modernist, with a lower-case "p") music for me. This was the late 1980's — I should have heard (of) him earlier, but I was always a late bloomer….
