The Puzzle

Last Sunday's NYT public editor / ombudsman's column focuses on the Jayson Blair incident of a decade ago, and puzzlingly calls it perhaps one of the worst incidents of breaking reader trust in the Times's history.

It's hard to know what to make of this – surely the way the Times fell for the Bush line on Iraq hook line and sinker was a far more egregious act of blinkered moral cowardice and trust-busting than anything it let Blair get away with.
